Trained in Western and Eastern schools of medicine, including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and integrative medicine, Samantha shares her personal journey that brought her to found Karam Institute and Black Bull Protein in 2015.
My journey to helping people heal began when my father, a retired chiropractor, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. At the time, I had my own restaurant in Ontario, Canada. After the doctors gave him no hope of recovery, I left my business and home to return to the states to care for my dad in Ft. Lauderdale. I took him to a leading acupuncturist from China, who said I should come work for her. I did and was also able to help my father. She taught at the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine and encouraged me to take the entrance exam. I passed, and she got me into the School. During this time, I gained knowledge in the use of Chinese herbs and various therapies that can help people strengthen their immunity, reduce inflammation in their bodies, and overcome illnesses and weight issues. I applied what I learned and strengthened my dad’s immune system in a natural, non-invasive way. Today, he is fully recovered from cancer.
One of the instructors at the School, an older surgeon, encouraged me to enroll in the Western Medical School, and it was during this time that I met an instructor and neurosurgeon who taught at the school two weeks per month, flying in from El Paso, Texas. We fell madly in love. He specialized in stem cell research at two hospitals in Juarez, Mexico. I worked for him for two years, moving to El Paso and doing all my medical rotations at the American-based hospital he owned. Then, when I was two weeks away from completing my schooling, David had a heart attack and died. He appeared perfectly healthy – he was a body builder.
After his death, I found steroids in his personal belongings and I decided to devote my life to helping prevent others from dying needlessly from steroid addiction. I went to one of the gyms that David owned and asked all the body builders to give me their performance-enhancing pills. I analyzed them in our lab, breaking down their chemical components and remaking them into all-natural and nutritious supplements. I also took David’s name and founded the Karam Institute; my father helped come up with the name of the marketing arm of my business, Black Bull Protein.
Now back in Florida, I have cultivated a special relationship with the state’s thriving wrestling community, partly because of my son’s enthusiasm for the sport. These athletes have enthusiastically embraced my protein powders and immunity products. I source my whey-based protein powder from a large-scale goat farmer in The Netherlands, who has farms throughout Europe, which gives me the ability to handle large-scale orders. I carefully select my herbs from trusted sources in China.
Today, I’m busier than I ever imagined. In addition to my U.S.-based clients, I ship products to gyms in both UK and Germany and am on the cusp of a new phase in my company that will include building a new state-of-the-art lab.
In the aftermath of losing the love of my life, I have found a new purpose and mission – to help those who have struggled with steroid use and the resulting liver and kidney problems rebuild their health. I believe that your body can heal itself with the right diet and lifestyle. Every day, I leverage my experience as both an executive chef and a doctor of Eastern Medicine to help people of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels find and sustain optimum health.
